F.A.M.E road project is build on the experience gained from Greenroad (greenroad.it), a Best Practice (result of a Project funded by the Apulia Region and implemented in the area of Taranto) for development of naturalistic and rural areas aiming at a sustainable growth based on the conservation and the valorization of the identity of target territories. The approach is holistic and participatory: cultural, naturalistic, economic and social aspects are all comprised in the planning and development of the activities of the model and in each phase of the project; moreover, local stakeholders are invited to participate and join to the processes, including individual citizens and tourists. The greenroad model is based on four pillars, the so called F.A.M.E. pillars, on which the actions of project are based on: Food, Art, Movement and Energy.
The experience of the project says that only an integrated F.A.M.E model development can also be sustainable and circularly repeatable. Italy and Greece often share wonderful naturalistic (sea united concept) and cultural areas, which are destinations of traditional tourism; however, this model of tourism is typically a mass and seasonal tourism, which, along the years, tends to deplete and spoil the local resources, poorly contributing to the local economy and, more generally, to the development of the areas. For these reasons, in the F.A.M.E Road project, we want to transfer the successful experience of greenroad.it, by scaling up to a transnational level the FAME paradigm. The main objective of the F.A.M.E Road project is to understand and identify the main problems faced today by the local communities and provide them with tools, services, expertise and best practices to overcome those problems and identify tailored solutions based on human centered local value chains creation.
The F.A.M.E Road project aims at improving citizens’ quality of life, support local and traditional businesses to get back being competitive in the market, create integrated and modern touristic offers aiming at providing transformational experiences for different target tourists exploring naturalistic and cultural heritage, develop network of economic and institutional stakeholders who approve and share the F.A.M.E values, create the F.A.M.E brand to promote products and services offered by the members of the network.
In particular the implementation of the F.A.M.E road project will take place in areas with different (somehow complementary) characteristics and natural assets, but with the same problems: (i) a rural internal area called Murgia, in Apulia (Gravina and Grottaglie), which will benefit in the next future by the visitors coming for Matera 2019, European Capital of Culture; (ii) a maritime area in Greece, which hosts hundreds of thousands of tourists in the summer time every year, but much less in the low season, even though the cultural and naturalistic assets of the area are accessible all year long. With the F.A.M.E Road project, we expect to increase the capacity of local communities to manage complex integrated tourist offers.
Project Objectives
The overall objective of the project is to test and adjust a valorization model, starting from a previous best practice, applied in Apulia. The model aims at providing local stakeholders with competence, networking capability, sustainable strategies and tools to conserve and protect natural and cultural territorial assets and at the same time, promoting and developing economic and touristic activities based on the same assets.
Likewise, the F.A.M.E model will offer to the local territories an opportunity to develop as a community capable to create networks and partnerships and to increase the capabilities to create local business opportunity. The local assets that are to be valorized will not be just physical places, landscapes or monuments, but also intangible assets which deeply characterize local territories, traditions, culture.
More specifically, the objectives of the project include:
Web platform
Create a web platform, in which will be collected and organized all the contents generated within the project, but also data from other experiences; the web platform will be also associated with a mobile app
Educational material
Design a training and coaching package, available also online, aiming at helping local small business activities in adjusting their offer according to the F.A.M.E paradigm and better reach their target customer
Branding
Develop the F.A.M.E brand, which will enclose and describe all the values of the model
Communication
Establish physical places (hubs/show rooms) where F.A.M.E values can be communicated at best to local population as well as to tourists

Municipality of Gravina di Puglia (Lead Partner)
The amazing Gravina di Puglia is perched on the edge of a ravine, in the Western Murgia, an area dotted with puli and gravine (ravines) on the border between Puglia and Basilicata.
The town centre of Gravina in Puglia has a hidden part: under the inhabited area, there is a well-kept underground world, with tunnels, cellars, stone churches, granaries, seventeenth century ovens. From piazza Benedetto XIII leave the steps which lead to the oldest neighbourhoods, amid medieval houses and stone churches, among which the one dedicated to the patron saint, San Michele. The discovering of the rock civilization of Gravina continues inside the Pomarici Santomasi Museum, which keeps important finds, such as frescos of the Stone Crypt of San Vito Vecchio. Gravina is part of the Alta Murgia National Park.
In fact, most of the town is located on one of the sides of the ravine, more than 100 metres deep. The countryside, dotted with rocks having different shapes, has two archaeological sites, Collina Petramagna and Padre Eterno, with ruins of temples, walls and floors of ancient buildings and several pieces of pottery.
The ruins of the Swabian Castle seem to be on the edge of a hill, perched on a promontory far away from the town centre, while the Church Madonna delle Grazie and the Basilica Cattedrale, on the edge of a crevasse, with a wonderful view on the ravine, are closer. Houses, caves, and frescoed churches populate the deep ravine, providing a spectacular and fascinating sight.
Municipality of Grottaglie
Grottaglie is located in the Salento peninsula, dividing the Adriatic sea from Ionian sea.
Grottaglie is placed on the top of a hill in the territory of the province of Taranto. It is about 20 Km far from Taranto with 32,000 inhabitants who live on a surface of about 100 km2.
Two are the most important economic sectors: agriculture – high quality white grapes are produced here – and ceramic handcraft works – represented in the old “area of Ceramics” made up of more than fifty workshops dug in the rock where highly appreciated ceramic artefacts are still produced.
Near the town, there is the airport “Marcello Arlotta” and the Hi-Tech industry of the “Alenia Aeronautics” group which produce fuselages for the 787 Boeing airplanes.
In the town there are many important historical buildings. Many of these are dated back to the XIVth century such as: the Bishop’s Castle, where you can find the Museum of Ceramics, and the Collegiate Church; The Hermitage in St Mary in Campitelli (IX century), the Church of Carmine (XVI century); The Sanctuary of St. Francesco de’ Geronimo – the Saint born in Grottaglie and Patron of the town; The Church of St. Francesco di Paola (XIX century) and the old Sanctuary of the Madonna di Mutata.
UNIVERSUS CSEI –Training and Innovation University Consortium
Universus is a Consortium founded in 1975 and boasts a storied history working on international projects. Its founding even predates the Politecnico of Bari, one of the charter members, by 15 years. Its success comes from the strong synergies between the professors, experts, and researchers who heavily contribute to the sharing of knowledge, and to the creation of an innovative entrepreneurship culture which is unique to the region. Universus relies on a large network of like-minded professionals who see innovation as vital to enhancing the creation and management of both 1) new tools, skills and indicators, and 2) models for local and regional economic development. The success of this process points the way to a successful, scalable, portable model that can be replicated. Enhancing the knowledge transfer and promoting a dialogue culture throughout the Mediterranean area is part of its mission, becoming hub of innovation and training.
